Police Report
August 24 – September 6
August 24 – A female reported that several unauthorized purchases were made from her chequing account between August 14th – 18th. Her bank cancelled her account and is attempting to retrieve the funds.
Police were dispatched to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Highway 32 and Norquay Drive. Police learned that the driver of a northbound vehicle attempted to make a westbound turn onto Norquay Drive and entered the path of a southbound vehicle, causing a collision. No injuries were reported and the driver of the northbound vehicle was issued a ticket for Proceeding before it is safe to do so ($174).
August 25 – A resident of Birch Bay reported that his wallet and several pieces of personal identification were stolen from his unlocked vehicle on August 20th. Police advised the male to report his stolen passport and Social Insurance card to Service Canada and to cancel his debit card.
August 26 – Staff of a local store reported that a male left the store several minutes earlier without paying for an item of merchandise. Police patrolled the nearby area and located the male suspect, who was found to be highly intoxicated, and arrested him for Theft Under $5000. He was later released once sober on an Appearance Notice and will be recommended to go through the Restorative Justice Diversion program.
Staff of a local store reported that a male who is currently banned from the store has attended on multiple occasions. Police located the male and issued him a ticket for Trespassing ($672).
August 28 – Winkler Police Service members, with assistance from the Morden Police Service, conducted a traffic stop in the RM of Montcalm as part of an ongoing drug investigation. A search of the male suspect and vehicle incident to arrest resulted in police locating cash and a significant quantity of cocaine. Search warrants were obtained granting police access to search the male’s residence and rented storage locker in Winkler. These searches resulted in police locating a BB gun, additional cocaine, and items related to drug trafficking. As a result of this investigation, police seized $495 cash, 244 grams of cocaine, 4.21 grams of crack cocaine, a vehicle, and drug trafficking paraphernalia. The total estimated street value of the seized cocaine was $25,000. A 50-year-old male of Winkler was charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (Cocaine) in the RM of Montcalm, Possessing Proceeds Obtained by Crime in the RM of Montcalm, Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (Cocaine) in Winkler, and Possessing a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose in Winkler. He was released on an Undertaking with a court date to appear in Morden Provincial Court. This investigation is ongoing.
A male reported that a large amount of money was withdrawn from his chequing account between August 10th – 13th via several unauthorized transactions. This investigation is ongoing.
August 31 – A female reported that she fell victim to a scam after attempting to sell an item on a local buy/sell website. A buyer sent her an e-transfer which required her to enter a passcode, and she later learned funds had been withdrawn from her account and there was an unauthorized transfer between her accounts. She advised her bank, who stated it appears the passcode enabled the scammer to gain access to her online banking, and her accounts were subsequently frozen.
A female reported that she was sexually assaulted by a male she met online. Police later located the male, arrested him for Sexual Assault and released him on an Undertaking with a court date at Morden Provincial Court.
August 31 – Staff of a local store reported that two males attempted to shoplift multiple items but were stopped by store staff and left without any merchandise.
September 1 – A female reported that she fell victim to a scam after receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be from Rogers regarding a deal to upgrade her phone. The female proceeded to order a new phone and when it arrived learned it was not the phone she ordered. She was advised to return the phone using a shipping label provided by the scammer (which would not return the phone to Rogers but to the scammer) and a new phone would be shipped to her. She never received the new phone and is now out the cost of the phone she shipped to the scammer.
Police were dispatched to a residence to conduct a wellbeing check and while speaking with a female she disclosed that she was assaulted by her boyfriend numerous times over the past several months. The male was arrested for Assault (x4), Assault with a Weapon, Forcible Confinement, Uttering Threats, Breaching a Recognizance, Failing to Comply with a Probation Order, and Possessing a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and was later released on a Release Order with numerous conditions.
September 3 – A report was received regarding damage to playground equipment at a public park. This file is still under investigation.
September 5 – At approximately 2:10 a.m., police were dispatched to a residence regarding an intoxicated male who was behaving in a violent manner. The male was arrested by police under the Protective Detention and Care of Intoxicated Persons Act, during which time he was extremely belligerent. Police learned that he was wanted on the strength of multiple warrants from another province and was bound by a release order not to leave that province. He was charged with Failing to Comply with a Release Order and released on an Appearance Notice.
September 6 – While on patrol on Prairie View Drive, police observed a vehicle rapidly accelerate away from a stop sign, causing the vehicle to make excessive noise. A traffic stop was conducted, at which time police observed the male to be displaying signs of impairment and liquor in the backseat. The driver complied with a demand for a breath sample which resulted in two “Fail” readings. He was issued an Immediate Roadside Prohibition which carried a $700 fine, 90-day driver’s licence suspension and 30-day vehicle impoundment, and the liquor was relinquished.
