Police Report

March 2 – March 22

March 2 – A male reported that he was struck by a vehicle while crossing Main Street at Mountain Avenue on foot and the driver did not stop. The male driver was contacted and later attended the Winkler Police Service where he was issued tickets for: As the driver of a vehicle involved in an accident, failing to give required information to a person injured in the accident ($298) and Failing to yield right of way to a pedestrian ($143).

Police received a report regarding a teenage female who assaulted three individuals who were known to her. She was arrested for Assault (x3) and remanded into custody at the Manitoba Youth Centre.

March 4 – Staff of a local business reported an attempted fraud after receiving multiple suspicious phone calls from a customer who made a purchase over the phone via credit card. The customer was advised over the phone that he would need to verify his identity and when he refused, the transaction was cancelled.

March 6 – Police were dispatched to assist the Altona Police Service in locating a vehicle heading toward Winkler. Police located the suspect vehicle, which attempted to evade police, but a traffic stop was successfully conducted. The male driver was charged with Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle and released on an Undertaking with a court date at Morden Provincial Court.

March 9 – A report was received regarding a male and female who were together and the male was under conditions not be in contact with the female, and police learned the male was wanted on an arrest warrant from another police agency. The male was located, arrested for Disobeying a Court Order (x2) and under the strength of the warrant and remanded into custody to appear in Winnipeg Provincial Court.

Mar 10 – A female reported that she fell victim to a scam after receiving a phone call on February 13th from someone claiming to be from Rogers offering her a lower monthly bill and the gift of a new free phone. She was advised to fill out information on the Rogers website (likely to add a phone to her current contract) and to attend Winnipeg to pick up the new phone. She was then contacted by the scammer who advised that she would receive a phone with more storage if she returned the one she just acquired and she proceeded to courier the phone to the scammer. She has not received a new phone and is required to pay the bill for the phone no longer in her possession. This investigation is ongoing.

March 11 – A male reported that he received a phone call from someone claiming to be from BellMTS regarding a phone promotion, at which time he provided personal identification information. After he didn’t receive an expected email, he contacted BellMTS directly who advised that the phone call had been a scam.

The manager of a local store reported that a female known to them shoplifted items of merchandise on two separate occasions. She was arrested for Theft Under $5000 (x2) and later released on an Undertaking with a court date at Morden Provincial Court and a barring notice on behalf of the store.

A report was received regarding historical sexual assaults against a female youth by an adult male known to her. The male was located, arrested for Sexual Assault (x3), Sexual Interference (x3) and Invitation to Sexual Touching (x2) and released on a Release Order with a court date at Morden Provincial Court.

March 12 – Staff of a local gas station reported that the previous day a female had aimed a BB gun at people and shot at several vehicles. This investigation is ongoing.

March 15 – Police were dispatched to the report of a female who had assaulted a male and female. The female suspect was located, arrested for Assault (x2) and later released on an Undertaking with a court date at Morden Provincial Court.

March 18 – Staff of a local business reported that an intoxicated male was currently inside their building and would be leaving in his vehicle shortly. Police attended the business, located the male suspect and conducted a Standardized Field Sobriety Test, to which the male performed poorly. Video footage was obtained showing the male leaving the driver’s side of the truck after it was parked and he was issued a 72-hour driver’s licence suspension and a ticket for: Driving an unregistered vehicle ($298).

March 22 – Police were dispatched to a residence regarding an unwanted male who was currently inside and refusing to leave. Upon speaking with the complainant police learned the male, who was highly intoxicated, had assaulted her and another female in the residence and he was subsequently charged with Assault (x2) and Being Unlawfully in a Dwelling House. He was released once sober on an Undertaking with a court date at Morden Provincial Court.
