October 21 – November 3

October 21 – A female reported that her ex-husband breached his condition not to contact her after approaching her in public. He later attended the Winkler Police Service where he was arrested for Failing to Comply with an Undertaking and released on an Appearance Notice.

October 22 – Police received a report from a female who stated that her Facebook account was hacked, disabled and then used to purchase bitcoin. She found an online customer support number for Facebook and provided gift card numbers as payment before realizing the support provider was fraudulent.

A male reported that he was involved in a romantic relationship with someone overseas and made multiple financial transactions to the individual. He realized he was being scammed and stopped sending payment, but his Paypal account was hacked and funds continued to be removed. Police provided the male with advice regarding computer safety.

A report of an attempted scam was received from a female who advised that she spoke with someone claiming to be from Microsoft and granted them access to her computer. The scammer attempted to manipulate their way into her bank account, but the female confirmed with her bank that she was not out any money. Police advised her to unplug her computer and have it examined at a local computer repair store, and to monitor her bank accounts.

October 23 – Police received a report of an assault stemming from a road rage incident regarding the speed of travel. The complainant stated he was followed by a vehicle to his workplace and once stopped, the driver approached his vehicle and assaulted him. The suspect was later arrested for Assault and Mischief Under $5000. He was released on an Undertaking with a court date at Morden Provincial Court.

October 25 – The owner of a local business reported that he received an invoice for a large amount from a company with which he was not familiar, and the invoice provided banking information with instructions to wire transfer the money. Due to its suspicious nature, no money was sent. This investigation is ongoing.

October 26 – A female reported that her intoxicated grandson threatened and assaulted her and her husband. The male was arrested for Assault, Uttering Threats, and under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act. The complainants declined to press charges, and the male was later released without charges once sober.

October 27 – Police observed a vehicle complete an illegal U-turn on Main Street and proceeded to conduct a traffic stop. Police advised the driver that they were performing mandatory alcohol screening, and she complied to a demand for a breath sample, which resulted in a “Fail” reading. She was issued an Immediate Roadside Prohibition which carried a 90-day driver’s licence suspension, 30-day vehicle impoundment and $700 fine. During this time, one of the passengers became belligerent with police and was arrested under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act. Upon querying the male, police learned he was under conditions not to have contact with one of the vehicle passengers and not to consume alcohol. He was subsequently charged with Failing to Comply with an Undertaking (x2) and released once sober on an Appearance Notice.

October 29 – Police were dispatched to a local store regarding a theft in progress involving a suspect who had removed merchandise from its packaging and concealed it on his person. Police located the male at which time he returned the stolen item. The store served a banishment notice to the male in lieu of criminal charges.

A female reported that she received several parking notices via text message containing a link to a provincial website which appeared to be legitimate. She made three separate payments but continued to receive texts. Police advised the female that this was a scam and to contact her banking institution and credit card company.

October 30 – A trailer was reported stolen from a property on Viking Road. This file is still under investigation.

A male reported that his vehicle was stolen from his place of work on Badger Avenue. This file is still under investigation.

October 31 – A report was received regarding an attempted vehicle theft that occurred on either Main Street South or Market Street. The vehicle had pry marks on the door and both the front and rear licence plates were stolen.

A male was reported to have stolen merchandise from a local business due to an ongoing dispute. Police had the suspect attend the Winkler Police Service at which time he was argumentative but returned the stolen merchandise. He was served with a banishment notice to the business.

Police received a report from a male who stated he was assaulted by another male. The suspect later attended the Winkler Police Service at which point he was arrested for Assault and released on an Undertaking with a court date at Morden Provincial Court.

November 1 – While attending to a complaint and speaking with the driver of a vehicle, police observed what appeared to be a handgun in the door panel. The male was arrested and a search of the vehicle incident to arrest revealed the handgun to be a replica made to shoot BBs. Police educated the male on carrying replica pistols and he voluntarily relinquished the replica to police.

A traffic stop was conducted on a vehicle travelling in a suspicious manner, during which time police observed multiple empty beer cans in the back seat. The driver complied to a demand for a breath sample, which resulted in a “Fail” reading. He was issued an Immediate Roadside Prohibition which carried a $700 fine, 90-day driver’s licence suspension and 30-day vehicle impoundment.

November 2 – Police were dispatched to a report of a verbal argument taking place between a male and female located on a parking lot on Main Street. The female appeared to be under the influence of a drug and was arrested under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act, at which time police located a weapon and what appeared to be fentanyl on her person. She was then arrested for Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and Possession of a Schedule I Substance. She was later released on an Undertaking with a court date in Morden Provincial Court.
