March 12 – The manager of a local store reported a shoplifting incident that occurred on March 11th involving a male suspect. This file is still under investigation.
Police were notified by loss prevention personnel from a local store that he had two male youths in custody for shoplifting. A search of the males’ backpacks incident to arrest resulted in police locating items stolen from numerous other local stores, to which the males admitted to stealing all the items. They were both arrested for Theft Under $5000, released to their parents, and have been referred to be dealt with through alternative measures.
March 13 – At approximately 9:30 a.m., a resident of 3rd Street reported that her vehicle, which had its key fob left inside, was stolen from her driveway sometime during the night. That same evening, the complainant reported that her stolen vehicle was located in the City of Winkler. Police proceeded to conduct a curfew check on a 27-year-old female who resides in the area and is currently serving a Conditional Sentence Order for numerous similar offences in other cities. Upon speaking with the female’s father, he confirmed she had not been home in the morning, and she was arrested for Failing to Comply with a Conditional Sentence Order. A search of the female incident to arrest resulted in police locating the vehicle’s key fob, and she also admitted to rummaging through vehicles in the area. She was charged with Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000 (vehicle key fob) and Theft of a Motor Vehicle and remanded into custody to appear in Winnipeg Provincial Court.
A male reported that he fell victim to a cryptocurrency scam after receiving multiple calls from someone claiming to be from Coinbase Support stating his account was flagged for suspicious activity. The scammer suggested that the male move his assets to a different wallet/account, which the male proceeded to do and, in the process, lost a substantial amount of money. Police were unable to trace the funds to their final account(s).
March 14 – While on patrol, police observed a male operating a vehicle who was known to have a warrant for his arrest and proceeded to conduct a traffic stop. The male was arrested under the strength of the warrant and later released on an Appearance Notice. He was also issued a ticket for Driving without holding a valid driver’s licence ($298).
March 19 – A female reported historical sexual assaults that occurred when she was a youth by a male youth known to her. This investigation is ongoing.
At approximately 11:36 a.m., police received a report regarding a suspected impaired driver. Police located the vehicle northbound on Main Street and observed signs of impairment based on its manner of travel. The vehicle proceeded to pull into a gas station and collided with a metal pump protector. Police conducted a traffic stop, and upon speaking with the driver observed her to be displaying signs of impairment, and a search of the vehicle resulted in police locating an open bottle of liquor. The female refused to provide a breath sample, was subsequently arrested for impaired driving and transported to the Winkler Police Service where she again refused to provide a breath sample after being given multiple opportunities to do so. She was charged with Operation of a Motor Vehicle While Impaired and Failure or Refusal to Comply with a Demand. She was released once sober on an Undertaking with a court date at Morden Provincial Court, and issued an Appearance Notice for As a driver, carrying liquor in a vehicle. Her driver’s licence was suspended for three months and the vehicle she was driving was impounded for 60 days.
March 21 – A male reported that his vehicle was stolen from a business located on George Avenue. This investigation is ongoing.
