December 16 – January 12

December 18 – Staff of a local store reported a theft that took place on December 16th regarding a male who left the store without paying for merchandise. This file is still under investigation.

December 24 – A resident of 6th Street reported that an intoxicated female entered his home without his permission. Police located the female hiding in a closet and arrested her for being unlawfully in a dwelling and under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act. She was charged with Mischief and released once sober on an Undertaking with a court date at Morden Provincial Court.

December 27 – A male reported that after watching a YouTube video regarding investment options he downloaded an app and provided a picture of his driver’s licence, credit card information, and his address. He then proceeded to invest a large amount of funds from his credit card into stocks on the app and received numerous phone calls regarding his investments. He realized he was being scammed and police advised him to make a report with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, along with notifying his bank and credit card provider.

December 28 – Police conducted a traffic stop on vehicle driver who was suspected of being impaired. Police instructed the male multiple times on how to provide a proper breath sample, but he refused. He was arrested and later released on an Immediate Roadside Prohibition, which carried a 90-day driver’s licence suspension, $700 fine and 60-day vehicle impoundment.

December 30 – A male was arrested and charged with Failure to Comply with a Release Order (x4) as he was under conditions not to attend the City of Winkler. He was released on a Release Order with a court date at Morden Provincial Court.

December 31 – Police received a report of a ‘grandparent’ scam regarding an elderly female who was contacted by someone portraying himself as her grandson who was in jail and needed bail money. The scammer accessed her bank account and made a purchase at a clothing store. The victim’s son notified her bank of the incident and has taken steps to prevent further loss.

A male was arrested and charged with Failure to Comply with an Undertaking after breaching his condition of not communicating with the complainant. He was released from custody on an Appearance Notice.

A report was received regarding a male who sent intimate images and an amount of bitcoin to an unknown person online who was now demanding more money, or they would release the images to his friends on social media. The male has not provided any further money and has blocked the scammer, who attempted to contact him using multiple different numbers.

January 1 – A female reported that she and her partner were assaulted by a male known to them. The male was later located, arrested for Assault and Assault with a Weapon and released on an Undertaking with a court date at Morden Provincial Court.

Police received a report of theft regarding two males who stayed in the complainant’s home while she was away for the holidays. When she returned, she found numerous expensive items to be missing, and the home was ‘trashed’. Police are seeking warrants for both males for the charge of Theft Under $5000.

January 3 – Staff of a local store reported that a male left the store without paying for a small amount of merchandise.

A male reported that the rear window of his vehicle was smashed while parked at a business on Kimberly Road. This investigation is ongoing.

January 4 – While on patrol on Main Street, an eastbound vehicle attempted to cross Main Street and nearly collided with police. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was issued a ticket for Driving without motor vehicle liability insurance ($672) and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

January 7 – Staff of a local store reported that two males entered the store, took an item of merchandise and fled in a vehicle. This file is still under investigation.

January 9 – A male reported that while driving his vehicle near 6th Street he was stopped by a male who brandished a canister of bear spray and appeared to be intoxicated by alcohol. The complainant was able to drive away without incident and provide police with a description of the suspect along with his address. Police located the suspect at his residence where he was subsequently arrested for Assault with a Weapon and later released once sober on an Undertaking with a court date at Morden Provincial Court.

January 10 – Police were notified of a scam that took place regarding a male’s compromised financial information which was used to open a bitcoin account in England. The male was then contacted by a female claiming to be a lawyer who could assist in obtaining the large amount of funds in the bitcoin account. He proceeded to make multiple transactions to the female who continually requested more money. Police advised the male that this was a scam and to stop sending money, along with taking the necessary precautions to protect his personal information.
