April 7 – A female reported that she fell victim to a cryptocurrency scam after seeing an ad on Facebook and contacting the company by phone, at which time she was required to send an amount of money and wait for a phone call. After receiving a phone call, she granted the scammer access to her computer, who then removed money from her accounts. The scammer was aggressive and pressured her multiple times to send more money and convinced her to take out multiple loans. From time to time, money was deposited into her account, making the scam seem legitimate. Over the course of several months, the female sent a substantial amount of money. This file is still under investigation.
April 8 – A male reported that he responded to an ad on Facebook regarding a work-from-home job opportunity and was asked to deposit a cheque to be used for the purchase of a laptop. Immediately after depositing the cheque his bank froze his account, and he is not out any money.
April 9 – Staff from a local store reported that three males left the store without paying for merchandise and departed the area in a vehicle. Police located the suspect vehicle in the parking lot of another store, with two of the male suspects inside, and the third male suspect located inside the store. Upon searching one of the males incident to arrest, drug paraphernalia was located on his person, and a search of the vehicle resulted in police locating an amount of drugs, but not the stolen goods. The three males, all of whom are residents of Winnipeg, were charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (Heroin) and one of the males was also charged with Possession of a Schedule I Substance (Heroin) and Failing to Comply with a Release Order. They were later released on Undertakings with court dates at Morden Provincial Court.
Police received a report from a female who advised she lost her credit card on March 25th, which was later used to make a fraudulent purchase. This investigation is ongoing.
April 11 – Police received a report of a vehicle that struck a child on a bicycle at the intersection of Gemstone Drive and 15th Street. The driver checked on the child, who suffered a mild injury, and left without providing her information. The driver was later located and issued a ticket for As the driver of a vehicle involved in an accident, failing to give required information to a person injured in the accident ($298).
At approximately 8:40 p.m., police issued a ticket to a driver for Improper equipment, namely window tint. Approximately 15 minutes later, police observed the same vehicle accelerating loudly while driving southbound on Main Street at a high rate of speed. Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop at which time the vehicle fled from police and a pursuit ensued, ending with the vehicle parking on the driveway of an unrelated residence. The 20-year-old male driver was arrested for Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Flight from a Peace Officer. He was issued an MPI Serious Offence Notice before being released on an Appearance Notice, and his vehicle was seized.
April 12 – An off-duty police officer prevented a theft in progress at a local store at which time the suspect fled the scene. The store declined pursuing charges and wished to have the male suspect banned. This investigation is ongoing.
April 14 – Police received a complaint regarding an intimate relationship between a 15-year-old male and 20-year-old female (who had told the male she was 17 years old). The female was located and arrested for Sexual Interference, Sexual Assault and Invitation to Sexual Touching and released on an Undertaking with a court date at Morden Provincial Court.
April 15 – A resident of Parkland Place reported that she discovered items missing from inside her vehicle which had been parked overnight inside her unlocked garage. This file is still under investigation.
April 18 – At approximately 11:11 p.m., police were travelling eastbound on Highway 14 and observed two eastbound vehicles stopped at a red light which then proceeded to accelerate rapidly after the light turned green. A traffic stop was conducted on both vehicles and both drivers were issued a ticket for Racing with another vehicle ($672) and their vehicles were seized for seven days.
April 19 – While police were conducting a traffic stop, a vehicle drove by and the driver yelled loudly and revved the engine while he sped away, squealing his tires in the process. Police observed this vehicle several minutes later and conducted a traffic stop, during which time police observed the driver to have bloodshot eyes and noted the odour of liquor on his breath. He complied to a demand for a breath sample, which resulted in a “Fail” reading. A search of the vehicle incident to arrest resulted in police locating liquor and unmarked cigarettes. The driver was issued an Immediate Roadside Prohibition, which carried a 90-day driver’s licence suspension and $700 fine, and was issued tickets for As a driver, carrying liquor in a vehicle ($237) and Possessing fewer than 25 units of unmarked tobacco ($2,542). His vehicle was also seized for 30 days.
April 20 – Police were dispatched to the report of a fight in progress involving several individuals and learned that a female was assaulted by another female. The female suspect was arrested for Assault (x2) and Uttering Threats and released on an Undertaking with a court date at Morden Provincial Court. This file is being referred to alternative measures.
April 22 – Staff of a local store approached an off-duty police officer and requested assistance regarding a suspected shoplifter who was currently at one of their tills and had attempted to conceal items on her person. The female paid for the concealed items, and she was issued a banishment notice.
April 23 – A complaint was received regarding a building on Royal Crescent which had two of its windows broken sometime between April 20th and 23rd. Through police investigation a suspect was located and arrested for Mischief Under $5000 and released on an Undertaking with a court date at Morden Provincial Court.
April 24 – A male attended the Winkler Police Service and began behaving in an erratic manner. While speaking with police, the odour of liquor emanated from the male’s breath, and he gestured punches at police. He was arrested for Assault a Police Officer (x3) and later released on an Undertaking with a court date at Morden Provincial Court.
April 27 – A female reported that she believed someone she knew was selling an item on Facebook and e-transferred funds for the purchase. She was provided with an address to pick up the item, but the residents knew nothing of the item for sale.
Police were southbound on Main Street and noted two motorcycles travelling northbound at a high rate of speed. Police conducted a U-turn in order to conduct a traffic stop and noted that both motorcycles along with another vehicle were pulling into a parking lot. Police learned the driver of the vehicle changed lanes, did not see one of the motorcycles and collided with it, causing injury to the rider. The driver of the vehicle was issued a ticket for Proceeding before safe to do so ($174) and the motorcyclist was issued a ticket for Driving imprudently ($203) due to his high rate of speed. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance and his motorcycle was towed from the scene.
At approximately 9:25 p.m., police observed a vehicle making an illegal U-turn on Main Street and proceeded to conduct a traffic stop. While speaking with the driver, police noted the odour of liquor emanating from the vehicle, and the driver complied to a demand for a breath sample, which resulted in a “Fail” reading. He was issued an Immediate Roadside Prohibition, which carried a 90-day driver’s licence suspension and $700 fine, and was issued a ticket for Making a U-turn where not permitted ($143) and his vehicle was seized for 30 days.
